Các bạn trẻ thân mến,

Năm nay, các bạn sẽ quy tụ tại bờ biển Baltic, ở Tallinn, để tham dự Cuộc Gặp mặt Giới trẻ Châu Âu lần thứ 47 do Cộng đoàn Taizé tổ chức. Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô gửi lời chào thân ái nhất đến các bạn, các anh em trong Cộng đoàn, các vị lãnh đạo của các Giáo hội Kitô giáo khác nhau tại Estonia và tất cả những người thiện chí đang đón tiếp các bạn trong những ngày cuối năm này.

Trong chuyến tông du đến ba quốc gia vùng Baltic năm 2018, Đức Thánh Cha đã gặp gỡ giới trẻ tại nhà thờ Tin Lành Lutheran Kaarli ở Tallinn, và ngài đã chia sẻ những lời sau đây như thể mô tả trải nghiệm mà các bạn đang sống trong những ngày này: "Thật luôn tốt đẹp khi được gặp gỡ, được chia sẻ câu chuyện cuộc sống của chúng ta, cũng như chia sẻ với nhau những suy nghĩ và hy vọng của chúng ta; cũng thật tuyệt vời khi chúng ta cùng nhau đến với tư cách là những người tin vào Chúa Giêsu Kitô" (Buổi Gặp gỡ Đại kết với Giới trẻ, 25.9.2018).

Việc cùng nhau quy tụ trong tinh thần chia sẻ và tình huynh đệ trở nên quan trọng hơn bao giờ hết trong bối cảnh hiện nay, khi thế giới của chúng ta đang trải qua những thử thách nặng nề. Nhiều quốc gia đang phải gánh chịu bạo lực và chiến tranh, nhiều người là nạn nhân của những cách đối xử phi nhân đạo, và những người khác mất phương hướng trước những bất công trong xã hội cũng như những mối nguy cơ về sinh thái.

Trong những ngày này ở Tallinn, các bạn mong muốn ‘hy vọng vượt trên cả hy vọng', như chủ đề của bức thư mà Thầy Matthew, Bề trên Cộng đoàn Taizé, đã viết cho năm sắp tới. Lời kêu gọi này hòa nhịp với chủ đề Năm Thánh 2025 và cũng dành cho từng người trong các bạn: "Hãy bước đi trong hy vọng! Hy vọng vượt thắng mọi mệt mỏi, mọi khủng hoảng và mọi lo âu. Hy vọng trao cho chúng ta động lực mạnh mẽ để tiến bước, vì đó là ân ban từ chính Thiên Chúa. Chúa đong đầy cuộc sống chúng ta bằng ý nghĩa, soi sáng con đường của chúng ta và chỉ cho chúng ta hướng đi cùng mục tiêu cuối cùng của cuộc sống" (Sứ điệp Ngày Giới trẻ Thế giới lần thứ 39, 24.11.2024).

Các bạn trẻ thân mến, Đức Thánh Cha đang trông cậy vào các bạn và tái khẳng định sự tin tưởng mà Giáo hội dành cho các bạn, vì Giáo hội hoàn vũ cần các bạn để loan báo Tin Mừng tình yêu Thiên Chúa trong thời đại hôm nay. Đây cũng là ý nghĩa của tiến trình hiệp hành mà Giáo hội Công Giáo đang thực hiện, giúp thúc đẩy đáng kể tình bạn đại kết với các anh chị em thuộc các hệ phái Kitô giáo khác.

Phó thác từng người trong các bạn và gia đình các bạn cho Chúa, qua lời chuyển cầu của Đức Trinh Nữ Maria, Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô chân thành ban Phép lành Tông tòa cho các bạn và cũng xin các bạn nhớ cầu nguyện cho ngài.

Dear young people,

It is with great joy and deep affection that we send you this message on the occasion of the European Meeting organised by the Taizé Community in the beautiful city of Tallinn. This event, which brings together young people from different nations and Christian traditions, is a living testimony to unity in Christ and to our common call to live as disciples of the Risen Lord.

The theme chosen for this meeting, “Hope beyond all hope”, invites us to deepen our faith in God, who is the ultimate source of hope. This hope, rooted in the resurrection of Christ, calls us to look beyond the challenges of our time. As the apostle Paul wrote: “Hoping against hope, he believed” (Romans 4:18). This message reminds us that faith opens up a path where there seems to be none.

In a world marked by divisions, conflicts and uncertainties, you are the bearers of new hope. By coming together to pray, share and reflect, you demonstrate the reality of God's love, which transcends borders and unites hearts in genuine communion. By your example, you show that the Christian faith is a transforming force capable of bringing peace and hope even in the darkest of times. We therefore invite you to pray in particular for the countries and regions ravaged by war and conflict, especially Ukraine and the Middle East.

The city of Tallinn, with its rich spiritual and cultural history, becomes in these days a sign of light for Europe and the world. By your presence here, you are witnesses to that light which is Christ, “the true light that enlightens every person” (John 1:9). This light calls you to be peacemakers, servants of God's justice and ambassadors of reconciliation. In a world often clouded by indifference and misunderstanding, your commitment is a spark of hope.

We wish to express our gratitude to the Taizé Community, and in particular to Brother Matthew, for their unceasing commitment to Christian unity. Your witness reminds us that unity is not a distant dream, but a reality that we can taste here and now, in humility and mutual love. The work of the Taizé Community inspires thousands of people around the world and reminds us that we are all called to work for lasting reconciliation.

Dear young people, we encourage you to deepen your faith, to constantly seek God's will and to live according to the teachings of the Gospel. Be messengers of Christian hope in your families, communities and societies. As the apostle Paul wrote: “Let everything you do be done with love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). This passage reminds us that love must be at the centre of everything we do, because it is through love that we reflect the face of Christ in the world.

In this spirit, we invite you to cultivate relationships based on listening and mutual respect. Every encounter, every dialogue, is an opportunity to discover the richness of others and to bear witness to the beauty of God's creation. You are called to be builders of communion, to build bridges where there are walls, and to enlighten the world by your actions and your words.

We pray that this European Meeting will be a source of inspiration, spiritual renewal and abundant graces for each of you. May the Lord guide and strengthen you in your journey of faith and witness. We trust that this experience will strengthen your desire to serve the Church and society with generosity and dedication in the new year ahead.

It is with great joy that I send greetings as you gather in Tallinn for this International Meeting for Young Europeans, hosted by Taizé. This gathering is a wonderful opportunity for young participants and their hosts to begin the new year united in prayer, fellowship, and hope.

I encourage each of you to embrace this chance to be pilgrims of hope and peace. As we embark on this journey together, let us carry within us the spirit of Taizé, a spirit that calls us to unity, reconciliation, and love.

When I first came to Taizé over thirty years ago, I was struck by the church where we gather to worship three times a day. It has multiple entrances and exits, reminding us that we can approach—or even leave— in many ways as we are gathered and sent out by Christ in different ways and in different directions. But at the centre is Christ, and his invitation that we come to him to find hope and peace for our lives and for the world.

If you find yourself here unsure of what it means or why you've come, know that you are in good company. Like Peter, we often stand with a mix of joy and trepidation before Jesus, but there is no better place to stand—for here we find the words of eternal life. May they guide you in the days to come. And may Christ direct your life.

As we seek God's blessing for the new year, I pray that this journey will inspire each of you to return home with a renewed commitment to building unity and working for reconciliation. These are the gifts our world and church so deeply need.

Dear young people gathered by the Taizé community in Tallinn,
Dear pilgrims of hope and peace!

Many greetings to all of you on behalf of the Lutheran World Federation, a worldwide communion of Lutheran churches, as you gather during this Christmas time, during the time where we celebrate the light that comes to the world through Jesus Christ. It is so important to gather in person, to listen attentively, to be in dialogue, to be transformed through the encounters. When we gather in God's name, it is ultimately God who transforms us through the encounters. We can't transform ourselves. Transformation is God's work, the Holy Spirit, always shaping us, molding us into persons of peace, persons of hope, and into communities of reconciliation and justice.

Transformation takes time and requires persistence and patience. As followers of Christ, we are not to be conformed to this world but, as Paul says in Romans 12, we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The Holy Spirit calls us to this ongoing transformation of our own minds, hearts, and attitudes which then impacts the communities we belong to so that they too become communities of hope in our world.

A community of hope sees a sibling in every human being. It takes seriously what Scripture teaches about encountering Jesus Christ in every person in need (Mt 25:31-40). It speaks out against injustice, so that righteousness may roll down like an ever-flowing stream (Am 5:24). It supports the gifts of all its members regardless of ethnicity or gender (Gal 3:28). And, it takes seriously the task to nurture God's creation (Gen 2:15).

All this is the work of the Holy Spirit in and through us, in and through our communities. We are witnesses to that hope beyond all hope, a hope that transforms the world.
May you be richly blessed so that you may be a blessing to others.

Dear Brother Matthew and European Young People,

I greet you on behalf of the World Methodist Council as you gather by the Baltic Sea in Tallinn, Estonia, for your European Youth Meeting.

I am inspired by your decision to enter the New Year in prayer and fellowship with other Christians. Know that I will join you in heart and spirit by praying 2024 out and 2025 in from 11:30 pm to midnight EST on New Year's Eve.

It is a difficult time in our world due to wars, famines, climate change and more. In addition, many people suffer personal health, relational, spiritual, emotional and economic challenges. Yet Christians are people of hope due to our faith in Jesus Christ. Our hope lies in the Resurrected Christ who offers us new life that begins now and continues forever. As stated in II Corinthians 5:17, “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being.”

The theme “hoping beyond all hope” captures the spirit of Christians as we journey through this life. In addition to being people of hope, we are instruments of God's peace through our words and actions. May you grow in your identity of “pilgrims of hope, pilgrims of peace” through this experience of prayer and fellowship.

My prayers are with you as you meet, pray and enjoy each other's company on this important occasion. Blessings to you as you “hope beyond all hope” now and always. In Christ,

In these dark days one could easily be tempted to become discouraged, seeing what humankind does to each other and to creation.

Yet our Lord Jesus came into this world to mend what is broken, to give perspective instead of hopeless, to teach and enable those who follow Him to live Love instead of selfishness and hate – to make peace possible.

You are such an encouragement to us all, by investing time, finances and energy from this most important motivation: to be ever more “pilgrims of hope, pilgrims of peace”.
Thank you for not giving up, but rather spreading this perspective and this reality that the world needs today.

Seeing everything that is going on, seeing so much pain everywhere, you may think that your effort cannot change much.

But be encouraged: your investment is never in vain, in the Lord!

When I attended a Taizé gathering as a student, I was inspired by your community's values of peace, compassion and solidarity.

This year's message of ‘hoping beyond all hope' is needed more than ever.
Around the world, conflicts are raging, inequalities are deepening, hate speech is tearing at the fabric of society and climate breakdown is all around us.

But I see hope in the young people around the globe leading the way in calling for change. As custodians of tomorrow, no one has a greater stake in forging a path to a better future. And the United Nations strives each day to grow and nurture that hope.

That is precisely why the Pact for the Future and the Declaration on Future Generations, adopted by the Member States of the United Nations in September, include commitments to strengthen the meaningful participation of young people in decision-making at the national and global levels.

Thank you for your commitment to advancing peace, sustainable development and human rights around the world. The United Nations stands with you and all people striving to build a more just, healthy and inclusive world. I wish you the very best for this year's meeting.

Dear friends of Taizé,

I am sure that this Annual Meeting will leave a lasting impression in you – just like it did with me when I attended two years ago. I still cherish the memory of those days. The faith and passion of the young people I met. The moments of silence and the moments of song. But also the words of wisdom of Brother Alois and many others. Back then, the theme you had chosen was “Becoming creators of unity”. It was perfect for a moment of rising polarisation. This year, once again, the theme chosen by Brother Matthew is the mirror of the times we live in. Times of war and sorrow, but also times when hope resists against all odds – hope beyond all hope.

Think about the events unfolding in Syria – a country that your community has a special connection to. After fourteen years of civil war and half a million victims, there is now the possibility of a new beginning. A new beginning like the one imagined by Father Paolo Dall'Oglio – who just like you dedicated his entire life to dialogue between faiths, and was kidnapped by the terrorists of Daesh for this. Some of you know his story: Father Paolo believed that the unity of all Syrians could not be achieved through repression – but only through reconciliation. He believed that beyond dictatorship, a new democratic Syria could rise. Achieving this dream will not be easy. Many Syrians – including those in Christian communities – are preoccupied about the future. We must be vigilant that all minorities are protected, and all religions respected. But after so much time and so much pain, hope is back to Syria.

As Brother Matthew wrote, there is no passivity in hope. In fact, hope is an active struggle against resignation. Nowhere is this clearer than in Ukraine. Every day, the bombs keep falling on Ukrainian cities, and every day, the people of Ukraine get up and keep on resisting against the aggressor. They know that giving up would not lead to peace, only to losing their freedom. And they need our support to keep the flame of hope alive. Resistance – not resignation – is the only road towards a just and lasting peace.

At this time of the year, Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Hope. May this Annual Meeting provide all of you with the strength to keep “hoping beyond all hope”. And may you and your families enjoy a peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.

Dear Taizé youth!

I am delighted that you have gathered in Tallinn, the northernmost capital city ever to host a Taizé New Year's meeting of young adults in Europe. This year's gathering will also go down in history as the largest gathering of young Christians ever held in Estonia.

The motto of the meeting – A Pilgrimage of Trust – refers to what is often lacking in today's world, which is trust between people, countries and nations. You, young people, can make a significant contribution to ensuring that there is more trust in the future than there is today. Trust is the foundation of everything, so it is important that we not only talk about it, but also act on it, everyone according to their possibilities. Trust also nurtures the self-confidence and courage that children, young people and adults need. By trusting each other and working together, we can also hope that the Europe of the future will have your face and be designed by you. And it will be united and strong.

In hope that in addition to the programme of the meeting, you will also find time to explore Tallinn and the attractions offered by the former Hanseatic city that has brought together people from different corners of the world over the centuries. Estonia is known in the world as a digital state and the land of unicorns, but there are still many things we are yet to see and experience.

Chứng nhận (Accreditation)

Để theo dõi Cuộc Gặp mặt Châu Âu với tư cách nhà báo và nhận các cập nhật thường xuyên, bạn cần đăng ký chứng nhận trực tuyến. Thẻ chứng nhận có thể được nhận tại trung tâm báo chí từ ngày 26 tháng 12 trở đi.

Trung tâm Báo chí

Một đội ngũ sẽ hỗ trợ các nhà báo trong công việc của họ tại trung tâm báo chí của Cuộc Gặp mặt Châu Âu, được mở cửa từ ngày 26 tháng 12. Sẽ có hai địa điểm:

Ban ngày, Trung tâm Báo chí sẽ đặt tại Kaarli Kool (Toompuiestee 4, Tallinn 10142). Giờ hoạt động là từ 9:30 đến 12:00 và từ 14:00 đến 16:00 (giờ Estonia).
Buổi tối, tại Tondiraba Ice Hall, một Trung tâm Báo chí thứ hai sẽ mở cửa từ 17:00 đến 19:00 trong phòng VIP, nằm ở đỉnh khán đài phía đối diện với khu vực trang trí và có thể tiếp cận từ bên trong khu vực cầu nguyện.

Trang trí năm nay tại sân trượt băng Tondiraba, nơi diễn ra các buổi cầu nguyện ban tối, lấy cảm hứng từ tác phẩm của nghệ sĩ Estonia Anu Raud. Sinh năm 1943, Anu Raud là một nghệ nhân dệt nổi tiếng của Estonia. Bà sống và làm việc tại một nông trại ở vùng nông thôn gần Tartu. Anu tìm cảm hứng từ các họa tiết truyền thống của đất nước, từ việc quan sát môi trường xung quanh và từ cảnh quan nhìn ra từ cửa sổ của mình. Bà cũng tích cực tham gia quảng bá nghệ thuật và văn hóa dân gian Estonia.

Các định dạng và họa tiết được sử dụng trong trang trí dẫn chúng ta bước vào mùa đông giá rét, hòa quyện các yếu tố khác nhau của cảnh quan và văn hóa nông thôn Estonia. Chúng ta thật vui mừng được hiện diện cùng với nhau trong những ngày này tại Tallinn. Các bạn đến từ hầu hết các quốc gia ở Châu Âu và cả những vùng xa xôi hơn, như những người hành hương đến Estonia, để cầu nguyện và chia sẻ như một dấu chỉ của hy vọng trên lục địa chúng ta ngày nay. - “Việc Hội Thánh của Đức Tổng Giám mục tham gia vào cuộc gặp gỡ này có ý nghĩa như thế nào?”

Đức Tổng Giám mục chia sẻ vài lời về sự tham gia của Giáo hội mình.

- “Cuộc gặp gỡ này mang ý nghĩa gì đối với bạn, một người trẻ Estonia?”

Regina chia sẻ một vài suy nghĩ.

Tôi nhớ lần đầu tiên tôi đến Tallinn cách đây ba mươi năm. Khi tôi đến ga tàu Baltijaam cùng một anh em khác, một nhóm bạn trẻ đã chờ chúng tôi ở đó. Họ hát và mang theo những bó hoa. Sự chào đón nồng nhiệt của họ khiến tôi rất xúc động, và tôi không bao giờ quên được điều đó.

Bây giờ chúng ta đang sống trong một thời đại khác, nhưng chẳng phải trong chúng ta vẫn còn mong muốn vượt ra khỏi vùng an toàn của mình để tìm kiếm sự hiệp thông với nhau hay sao? Điều đó giúp chúng ta hiểu rằng chúng ta được mời gọi hướng tới điều gì đó lớn lao hơn những gì chúng ta thấy ngay từ ban đầu.

Các bạn đã nhận được bức thư “Hy vọng vượt trên mọi hy vọng”, được viết cho cuộc gặp gỡ này và những cuộc gặp gỡ tiếp theo trong năm tới. Trong những ngày này, các bạn sẽ cùng nhau khám phá các khía cạnh khác nhau của chủ đề này. Vào thời điểm chúng ta dễ nản lòng trước những gì xảy ra trên thế giới và trong xã hội, liệu chúng ta có sẵn sàng lắng nghe nhau và khám phá điều đã được đặt để trong trái tim mỗi người không?

Để viết bức thư này, tôi đã dành nhiều thời gian lắng nghe các bạn trẻ sống trong những khu vực chiến tranh. Tôi rất ấn tượng bởi lòng dũng cảm và sự kiên cường của họ. Nhiều người tôi nói chuyện đã chia sẻ rằng đức tin là yếu tố quan trọng giúp họ đối mặt với thực tại khắc nghiệt của cuộc sống.

Đức tin, sự tín thác đơn sơ vào tình yêu của Thiên Chúa, hiểu rằng nhờ sự Phục sinh của Chúa Giêsu, cái chết sẽ không bao giờ có lời kết cuối cùng. Họ đã chia sẻ với tôi về niềm hy vọng – một niềm hy vọng vượt trên mọi hy vọng – bởi vì họ tin tưởng vào một cuộc sống mới sẽ nảy sinh ngay cả khi mọi thứ dường như đã mất.

Tối nay, trong giờ cầu nguyện, chúng ta đã nghe bài Magnificat – bài ca của Đức Maria, Mẹ Chúa Giêsu. Là một người trẻ, Mẹ đã đối diện với hoàn cảnh mà mình chưa từng nghĩ đến. Sống trong một đất nước bị chiếm đóng, Mẹ hiểu được tầm quan trọng của đức tin vào Thiên Chúa và can đảm cất tiếng “xin vâng” trước những gì Chúa yêu cầu nơi Mẹ.

Mẹ đã đến thăm người chị họ Êlisabét, người cũng đang mong chờ một sự hạ sinh diệu kỳ. Giống như Đức Maria, mỗi người chúng ta cần có những người như bà Êlisabét. Những người xác nhận những gì chúng ta biết về những điều Thiên Chúa muốn nơi chúng ta, nhưng lại thật khó tin để thực hiện.

Lời xác nhận của người chị họ khiến Đức Maria cất lên bài ca ngợi khen. Mẹ nhìn thấy cách Thiên Chúa nâng đỡ những người bé mọn, còn kẻ quyền thế bị hạ bệ. Viễn cảnh của Mẹ là một thế giới, dưới dấu chỉ của tình yêu thương xót Chúa, là một thế giới công lý và hòa bình, nơi không ai phải thiếu thốn. Khi nghe những lời này, tôi cảm thấy một điều gì đó nơi tôi dám tin rằng hoàn cảnh có thể thay đổi, và niềm hy vọng của tôi được tái sinh.

Trong những ngày này, tôi mời gọi các bạn hãy hát bài ca của Đức Maria. Khi các bạn hát, hãy cầu nguyện cho những hoàn cảnh sẽ được biến đổi. Hãy nhớ đến những người sống dưới các chế độ áp bức, nhưng khát khao công lý và hòa bình. Tôi nhớ rất rõ cuộc Cách mạng Ca hát vào năm 1991, góp phần mang lại độc lập cho Estonia. Rất nhiều bạn trẻ mà tôi đã trò chuyện trong khi chuẩn bị Bức thư chia sẻ rằng việc hát ca rất quan trọng trong việc làm mới niềm hy vọng và mang lại can đảm để kiên trì.

Cần phải có lòng can đảm để hy vọng. Trong thư, tôi trích lời của nhà thần học người Peru, Gustavo Gutiérrez: “Thiên Chúa sẽ không quên giao ước: lòng trung thành trước hết và quan trọng nhất là ký ức … Có ký ức không có nghĩa là chỉ cố định trong quá khứ. Ghi nhớ quá khứ là điều quan trọng, nhưng điều đó quan trọng bởi vì nó giúp chúng ta đặt hy vọng cho tương lai.”

Chúng ta không thể quên quá khứ, nhưng chúng ta có thể nhìn vào đó để xây dựng ngày hôm nay và từng bước dựng nên tương lai của chúng ta. Chẳng phải đó là cách Thiên Chúa hành động sao? Qua Chúa Thánh Thần, Thiên Chúa luôn hoạt động trong chúng ta và quanh chúng ta, biến đổi những tổn thương của chúng ta và chúc lành cho niềm vui của chúng ta.

Chúng ta đừng quên quá khứ, nhưng cũng dám hy vọng vượt trên mọi hy vọng.

Hôm nay, các bạn đã tham gia vào các buổi cử hành tại các giáo xứ đón tiếp. Chúng tôi biết rằng nhiều bạn đang ở tại các trường học, hội trường và một số người đang ở trong các trung tâm quân đội, những nơi từng được sử dụng để đón tiếp người tị nạn trong những năm qua.

Khi tôi còn trẻ, tôi tham dự cuộc gặp gỡ Taizé tại Barcelona năm 1985, ban đầu tôi cũng ở trong một ngôi trường lớn. Điều đó không giống như tôi mong đợi và không hề dễ dàng. Nhưng dần dần, đây đã trở thành một kinh nghiệm quan trọng về đời sống cộng đoàn và sự sẻ chia. Việc quan tâm đến nhau, sẵn sàng phục vụ và chấp nhận một lối sống đơn giản đã định hình cách nhìn của tôi về tương lai.

Trong cuộc gặp gỡ này, các bạn cũng có cơ hội tham gia nhiều hội thảo khác nhau. Tôi hy vọng rằng những hội thảo này sẽ nâng đỡ các bạn trong hành trình tìm kiếm và giúp các bạn gặp gỡ những người Estonia dấn thân, với những chứng tá của họ sẽ khích lệ chúng ta trên con đường đức tin.

Hôm qua, tôi đã nói rằng chúng ta không thể quên quá khứ, nhưng có thể nhìn vào đó để xây dựng ngày hôm nay và từng bước dựng nên tương lai. Ở rất nhiều quốc gia của chúng ta, lịch sử đã để lại những vết thương mà chúng ta vẫn còn mang trong mình đến hôm nay. Một số khác trong các bạn, đặc biệt là các bạn đến từ Ukraine, vẫn đang trải qua những kinh hoàng của chiến tranh. Chút nữa đây, chúng ta sẽ lắng nghe Andriana và Marta, những người đến từ Ukraine.

Tuần trước, tôi đã ở Libăng. Cùng với một người anh em trong Cộng đoàn, vốn xuất thân từ quốc gia này, tôi đã đến thăm các cộng đoàn tôn giáo khác nhau trong thời gian chuẩn bị lễ Giáng sinh. Các bạn biết rằng Trung Đông hiện tại vẫn đang chìm trong chiến tranh. Chúng tôi có rất nhiều bạn hữu ở đó và chuyến viếng thăm của chúng tôi là một dấu chỉ nhỏ của tình liên đới với họ.

Sự rộng lượng trong việc đón tiếp ở một vùng đất chịu nhiều hoang tàn thật khiến tôi cảm phục. Những tòa nhà tại nhiều nơi trong đất nước vẫn là đống đổ nát, nhưng người dân vẫn kiên cường mở lại các cửa hàng và dọn sạch đống đổ nát ấy. Sự kiên cường ấy chính là một cách kháng cự lại bạo lực đã giáng xuống nơi đây.

Hiện tại có rất nhiều điều bất định. Chiến tranh có thể quay trở lại. Dẫu vậy, những người mà chúng tôi đã gặp vẫn chia sẻ niềm vui của lễ Giáng sinh. Đức tin của họ chính là ánh sáng chiếu soi trong bóng tối.

Chúng tôi cũng đã gặp gỡ một vị sheikh Hồi giáo ở miền nam đất nước. Ngôi nhà của chính ông đã bị phá hủy và một số làng gần đó vẫn còn bị phong tỏa. Những quả bom vẫn còn rơi khi ông an táng những Kitô hữu đã chết trong lúc chờ linh mục đến để cử hành các nghi thức cần thiết.

Khi tôi trò chuyện với những người trẻ Libăng trong thời gian xảy ra các trận oanh tạc gần đây, tôi cảm nhận được niềm hy vọng của họ về một tương lai hòa bình và công lý. Lòng can đảm của họ thật rõ ràng, dù tuyệt vọng luôn lảng vảng quanh đây. Tối nay, chúng ta đã nghe Thánh Phaolô Tông đồ viết cho các tín hữu tiên khởi tại Rôma: “Chúng ta trông mong điều mình chưa từng thấy.” Tôi cảm nhận rất mạnh mẽ điều này khi lắng nghe những người trẻ ấy. Những cuộc gặp gỡ tuần trước đã xác nhận những gì tôi nghe trước đó.

Chính Chúa Giêsu cũng đã sinh ra trong cảnh nghèo hèn vào một thời điểm đầy bấp bênh tại vùng đất mà Ngài sẽ sống. Chúng ta cũng có thể rơi vào những hoàn cảnh mà con đường phía trước dường như mờ mịt. Chúng ta có thể cảm thấy tức giận và bất lực trước một số thực tại, nhưng liệu điều này có thúc đẩy chúng ta hành động không? Một người được trích dẫn trong Bức thư đã nói với một anh em trong Cộng đoàn của chúng tôi gần đây rằng: “Một cơn giận dữ đầy sáng tạo đang cư ngụ trong tôi.” Những cử chỉ đơn sơ nhất có thể trở thành dấu chỉ cho khát vọng hy vọng của chúng ta.

Và chúng ta cũng đã nghe trong bài đọc về tiếng rên xiết của thụ tạo. Gia đình nhân loại đầy thương tích của chúng ta là một phần trong thụ tạo bị tổn thương, nơi mọi sự đều là ân ban, mọi sự đều mong manh và mọi sự đều liên kết với nhau. Mỗi người chúng ta được mời gọi đưa ra những chọn lựa nào để bày tỏ sự chăm sóc cho ngôi nhà chung của chúng ta, thụ tạo tốt đẹp của Thiên Chúa?

Khi tôi đến Ukraine vào tháng Năm, tôi đã gặp rất nhiều người, cả người trẻ và người không còn trẻ nữa, những người đang dành thời gian và sức lực để giúp đỡ người khác. Tôi nghĩ đến một chàng trai trẻ là giám đốc của một trại trẻ mồ côi, một người phụ nữ tổ chức các khóa huấn luyện về cấp cứu và chấn thương, một người góa phụ – chồng cô đã bị giết năm ngoái – người hiện đang điều hành một hiệp hội dành cho trẻ em có nhu cầu đặc biệt.

Tôi muốn mời Andriana và Marta từ Ukraine chia sẻ đôi lời với chúng ta.

– Điều gì giúp các bạn giữ vững hy vọng trong hoàn cảnh hiện tại?

Thật lòng mà nói, không phải lúc nào cũng dễ dàng để giữ hy vọng khi bạn chứng kiến sự bất công kéo dài quá lâu... Nhưng điều giúp chúng tôi không đánh mất hy vọng chính là đức tin. Chúng tôi tin rằng điều không thể đối với con người thì có thể đối với Thiên Chúa. Luôn luôn có bình minh sau một đêm đen. Chúng tôi tin rằng Ngài luôn ở bên những ai đau khổ và cũng cảm nhận được những nỗi đau của chúng tôi. Chúng tôi cũng biết rằng Ngài không bỏ rơi chúng tôi trong hoàn cảnh khó khăn này.

– Chúng tôi có thể cầu nguyện cho các bạn như thế nào trong thời gian sắp tới?

Trong những thời điểm khó khăn và đen tối này, việc hiệp nhất trong lời cầu nguyện và cùng đứng bên nhau là vô cùng quan trọng. Chúng tôi xin các bạn cầu nguyện với chúng tôi cho chủ quyền của Ukraine, cho sự chấm dứt những cuộc tấn công vào quê hương chúng tôi, cho sự khôn ngoan của các nhà lãnh đạo và cho hòa bình mau tới. Xin hãy cầu nguyện cho tất cả những người đã mất mạng vì cuộc chiến tàn khốc và bất công này, cho những ai mất đi người thân và mái ấm, cho các binh sĩ của chúng tôi – những người mỗi ngày bảo vệ chúng tôi, sẵn sàng hy sinh mạng sống mình. Ước mong mọi gia đình sẽ được đón họ trở về an toàn. Xin cầu nguyện cho những ai bị bắt giữ, bị thương, bị mất tích, những người đang chịu đau đớn về thể chất hoặc tinh thần, những ai đau khổ và đang cần sự giúp đỡ. Cảm ơn các bạn vì tất cả những lời cầu nguyện, chúng tôi có thể cảm nhận được sức mạnh từ những lời cầu nguyện ấy!

Sáng mai, các bạn sẽ cùng đọc phần thứ hai của “Bức thư” Lắng nghe những người hy vọng, cũng như một đoạn Kinh Thánh được chỉ định trong ứng dụng trên điện thoại của cuộc gặp mặt. Hai trong số những câu hỏi các bạn sẽ chia sẻ là: “Tôi đã gặp chứng nhân hy vọng nào trong cuộc đời mình chưa?” và “Tôi đã học được gì từ họ?” Có lẽ các bạn có thể bắt đầu suy ngẫm về điều này ngay từ tối nay.

Giờ cầu nguyện tối nay của chúng ta sẽ kết thúc với thời gian cầu nguyện quanh Thánh giá. Tất cả những ai muốn, có thể đến cầu nguyện trước Thánh giá để phó thác cho Chúa Giêsu những lo âu, trăn trở của mình, cũng như những hoàn cảnh đau khổ trên thế giới. Đức Kitô đón nhận mỗi người chúng ta như chính chúng ta là, và cũng như khi Ngài còn tại thế, Ngài đồng hành với chúng ta trong những băn khoăn và nghi ngờ, cũng như chung chia niềm vui của chúng ta. Ngài đổi mới niềm hy vọng cho chúng ta.

Người Lữ hành Hòa bình

Vào buổi tối cuối cùng của Cuộc Gặp mặt Châu Âu ở Ljubljana, Thầy Matthew đã hỏi câu hỏi sau:

“Chúng ta có sẵn sàng bước cùng người khác không? Nếu chúng ta có thể làm được điều đó thì với tư cách là những Kitô hữu cùng nhau, giống như men trong bột, chúng ta có thể tạo nên sự khác biệt. Phải chăng hòa bình giữa chúng ta không mang lại hy vọng lớn hơn cho hòa bình trên thế giới? Chúng ta đã sẵn sàng lên đường với tư cách là những Người Lữ hành Hòa bình trong thời gian từ nay cho đến khi Cuộc Gặp mặt Châu Âu ở Tallinn tiếp tục Cuộc Hành hương của Tín thác trên Trái đất chưa?

Liệu chúng ta có thể dành thời gian cho đến Lễ Phục sinh năm 2024 để suy ngẫm xem chúng ta có thể nghĩ ra sáng kiến nào với tư cách là những Người hành hương Hòa bình ở các quốc gia của mình hiện tại không? Làm thế nào chúng ta có thể cầu nguyện, gặp gỡ và thậm chí đi từ nơi này sang nơi khác, từ nhà thờ này sang nhà thờ khác và tìm kiếm con đường hòa bình?"

Khi Mùa Chay bắt đầu, làm thế nào mỗi người có thể suy ngẫm về chủ đề trở thành những Người Hành hương Hòa bình ở bất cứ nơi đâu? Nó không có nghĩa là nhất thiết phải bắt đầu một cái gì đó lớn lao. Nó có thể chỉ đơn giản là tham gia vào các sáng kiến hiện có.

Trong lời giới thiệu tại Hội đồng Cộng đoàn thường niên vào tháng 1, Thầy Matthew đã chia sẻ những lời này với các anh em:

“Làm thế nào chúng ta được mời gọi hiện diện như một cộng đoàn trước những vết thương của gia đình nhân loại? Chúng ta không thể tìm cách trở thành những người xây dựng sự hiệp nhất hoặc những người hành hương hòa bình mà không lắng nghe tiếng nói của những người phải chịu đựng những xung đột chết người hoặc bạo lực đang ngày càng rình rập trong xã hội của chúng ta. (…) Không thể có hòa bình lâu dài nếu không có công lý cho tất cả mọi người, đặc biệt là những người đau khổ. Điều này thách thức chúng ta như thế nào? Bao nhiêu lần trong Tin Mừng Chúa Giêsu đã vượt qua những rào cản ngăn cách giữa các dân tộc thù địch? Khi nói về cuộc sống của mình đã hy sinh vì tất cả mọi người trên thập giá, Thánh Phaolô nói với chúng ta về Chúa Kitô rằng ngài: “đã làm cho đôi bên được hoà giải với Thiên Chúa trong một thân thể duy nhất; trên thập giá, Người đã tiêu diệt sự thù ghét. Người đã đến loan Tin Mừng bình an: bình an cho anh em là những kẻ ở xa, và bình an cho những kẻ ở gần” (Ep 2,16-17)

Một trong hai thầy đang lên kế hoạch cho một loạt chuyến thăm Ba Lan và liên quan đến việc này đã đưa ra nhận xét sau:

“Để đáp lại nhiều lời mời mà tôi đã nhận được tại Cuộc Gặp mặt Châu Âu ở Ljubljana, tôi sẽ tới Ba Lan vào tháng 4 tới. Tôi đã chọn 14 thành phố cho chuyến thăm này dưới biểu ngữ “Hành Trình Cùng Nhau”. Chắc chắn tôi sẽ di chuyển, nhưng để được cùng nhau, tôi đã mời những người trẻ từ mỗi thị trấn này đi cùng tôi. Ít nhất hai bạn trẻ từ thành phố thứ nhất sẽ cùng tôi đến thành phố thứ hai để được chào đón và tham gia chương trình đã được chuẩn bị sẵn. Những người trẻ ở thành phố thứ hai sẽ đi cùng tôi đến thành phố tiếp theo, v.v. Nếu những người trẻ muốn cùng tôi đến thăm nhiều thị trấn hơn thì càng tốt. Họ sẽ được các gia đình và hội thánh địa phương chào đón. Tôi hy vọng rằng ý tưởng này sẽ thành công và hành trình thể chất và tinh thần sẽ thực sự diễn ra cùng nhau.”

“Lạy Chúa, xin dò xét để biết rõ lòng con”19-21/4/2024 Gặp mặt quốc tế ở Praha

Cuộc gặp mặt đại kết, Praha 19-21/4/2024, được tổ chức với các thầy đến từ Taizé, sẽ tiếp tục truyền thống các cuộc gặp gỡ đại kết của Ngày Tín thác đã được tổ chức trong nhiều năm qua tại nhiều thành phố khác nhau ở Cộng hòa Séc. Kể từ năm 2007, khi cuộc gặp mặt như vậy lần đầu tiên được tổ chức tại Zlín, các thành phố Brno, Olomouc, České Budějovice, Praha và Ostrava đã thay phiên nhau đăng cai các cuộc gặp mặt.

Cuộc gặp mặt sắp tới ở Praha có chủ đề “Lạy Chúa, xin dò xét để biết rõ lòng con” (Thánh vịnh 139,23). Đây sẽ là chủ đề của chương trình bao gồm phần giới thiệu Kinh Thánh, chia sẻ trong các nhóm nhỏ, hội thảo và cầu nguyện với các bài hát của Taizé. Những người tham gia sẽ được người dân địa phương đón tiếp.

Chúng tôi muốn mời những người trẻ từ 18-35 tuổi không chỉ từ Cộng hòa Séc mà còn đến từ các quốc gia khác.

Chương trình dự kiến

Tất cả các buổi cầu nguyện và hầu hết các phần khác của chương trình sẽ diễn ra tại nhà thờ Salvátor (Địa chỉ: U Salvátora, Salvátorská 1, Prague 1).

He also expresses his closeness to all of you who are involved at different levels in the life of the Church and of your different nations.

The recent World Youth Days gave you the opportunity to live, as a Church, as a community, the beautiful experience of friendship with God and with others. Indeed, you are God's today, the Church's today! The Church needs you to be fully herself. As Church, you are the Body of the Risen Lord present in the world. Dear friends, we live in a world full of noise, where the values of silence and listening are stifled. In this context, I invite you to rediscover the profound dimension of listening. Listening is an act of love. It lies at the heart of trust. Without listening, little can grow or develop. Listening gives the other person the space to exist. We often have the impression that the one who shouts loudest is worth listening to. Unfortunately, today violence is gaining more and more ground. We are living in difficult times, with conflicts and wars scattered across the world, because nobody listens anymore. I urge you to dare to build a different world, a world of listening, dialogue and openness, to "to point to ideals other than those of this world, testifying to the beauty of generosity, service, purity, perseverance, forgiveness, fidelity to our personal vocation, prayer, the pursuit of justice and the common good, love for the poor, and social friendship." (Christus vivit, n. 36).

One of the challenges you face is to walk together, to work towards the qualitative transformation of life in our societies. Walking together means blocking the road to marginalization, closure, exclusion and the rejection of one category of people. You become builders of bridges between peoples, cultures and religions, for a stable and open world. We must commit ourselves to living like our Master and Lord Jesus, who excluded no one from his path. Rooted in communion with God, Christ shared his life with those who came to him. He recognized God's presence in women and men on the margins of society, even those who did not belong to his people.

Faced with today's challenges and our own frailty, some people sometimes feel “homeless.” When we face these challenges together, there can be experiences of beauty, of transcendence, that help us to discover the spark that makes us begin again with new vitality.

Dear young people, the Holy Father is counting on you and trusts you, and the Church trusts you. With your words and actions, give a powerful message to our world, which rejects the vulnerable. Make your dreams of love, justice and peace a concrete reality, starting with yourselves. Live in the present. Don't sacrifice your precious youth on the altar of superficial pleasures. Don't let your dreams be stolen, and contribute to "building a society worthy of the name" (Fratelli tutti, n. 71). Entrusting each of you and your families to the Lord, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Pope Francis grants you his Apostolic Blessing with all his heart. I ask you to pray for him.

We send our warmest and most fatherly greetings to all of you who are meeting in that beautiful city of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, where the 46th young adult European meeting of Taizé is currently being held around a theme that is particularly important today, "Journeying together."

It is with great joy that we send you this message of peace and hope as you share a unique moment in your lives, a time of prayer, reflection and ecumenical fellowship. For over forty years, the spiritual tradition of the Taizé Community, following in the footsteps of its founder Brother Roger, has created a unique space where young people of different Christian denominations from all over Europe can walk together on this pilgrimage of unity and reconciliation. At the heart of this meeting, you will discover the richness of our differences and the strength of our unity in faith. Inspired by the words of our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, you are invited to journey together. Let us recall his words in the Gospel according to Saint John the Theologian: "I give you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another". (John 13:34) May this love guide your collective journey, forging deep bonds of friendship and mutual understanding. In this pivotal period, at the crossroads of two years, when peace in Europe and the world requires our total commitment, we are called to work together towards a future of justice, reconciliation and solidarity. May your discussions and deliberations address the challenges of our time, encouraging everyone to contribute to building a better, fairer world. As St. Basil the Great said, "Without peace with all peoples, insofar as it is according to my possibilities, I cannot call myself a worthy servant of Jesus Christ." And he added, "Nothing is more characteristic of a Christian than to be a peacemaker". We hope that these days will be marked by the creation of new friendships, the growth of a deeper understanding of your neighbor, and the discovery of the diversity of the Christian faith in this rich European context. May this experience be for you a significant step on your common journey of faith, transformation and conversation in Christ.

Together, make this meeting an exceptional moment of hope and fraternity. May your exchanges and prayers guide you towards a future where Christian youth, united in its diversity, can play a significant role in building a better world, an exemplary Europe driven by an ecumenical ethos of solidarity. I want to congratulate you, once again, on becoming Prior of Taizé (…). The prayer vigil in Rome was a truly momentous and memorable occasion. Can there have ever been such a powerful ecumenical symbol of prayer in St Peter's Square before? I was very moved to be present.

And of course I am delighted to send my greetings to your 46th European Meeting of young adults. What an extraordinary blessing the Taizé community has been to the churches over many years! Your themes of listening, journeying, being with others, remaining with God and with others, are absolutely central to what the Christian churches have to offer our distressed and suffering world. Young people are the hope of the world, and my prayers for an inspiring, uplifting Meeting go with you, and I pray for God's blessing on you.

I am so happy to send our prayers and greetings to you, as you gather for this year's Taizé youth encounter, and to encourage your ongoing ecumenical journey.

You meet at a time of particular pain for Europe—and indeed the world. All the more reason, then, to come together in faith. The world needs you, your youth and vision, your truth-telling and readiness to embrace life and serve humanity.

In these days of challenge, when so many find brokenness, pain, and despair, someone must stand up for hope. Let it be you! God desires it, Christ inspires it, and the Spirit enables it.

We at the World Council of Churches join your pilgrimage to our own. We will walk together. We will pray together. We will work together for justice, peace, and reconciliation.
So this is our prayer for you: May Ljubljana be for each of you the next step in your sacred journey of faith. May you find there the joys of community, the assurance of God's loving presence, and the courage to continue seeking authenticity in your own lives and justice for all humanity. The God of Life leads us on. Let us embrace life, with all its perils and possibilities and, brought together in Christ, live in love for the world and its future.

Greetings from the Lutheran World Federation. Greetings in these days of Christmas, of one hope born in the world. Today as pilgrims who take the risk of actively listening, you open a space for The Holy Spirit to act, bringing us together in unexpected ways to live in communion, to live together in unity, in reconciled diversity.

Listening is a gospel adventure. Listening opens a way forward in the midst of violence and war, that opposes human beings and communities one against the other. Listening is an expression of faith that liberates us, that frees us from the grips of the culture of success and prosperity, which imprisons so many today. Your witness, as you gather and pray, as you listen in silence, is greatly needed in our world today.

The Lutheran World Federation and its many member churches, join you in that prayer for peace, for reconciliation, for justice and for hope.

Around the world, young people are leading the way – raising their voices for change, creating solutions, and forging a path to a better future. The United Nations stands with you and all people striving to create a fairer, more compassionate world.

Dear friends of Taizé,

It was the Christmas of 2019 when Brother Alois wrote to me, asking me for the first time to address Taizé's European Meeting of Young Adults in Poland. His letter struck a chord with me. Its title was “Always on the move, never uprooted” – a quote from Saint Urszula Ledochowska. It made me think of my children and of many other young Europeans, anchored in age-old values but always ready for innovation and change. Since then, your annual European meeting of young adults has become for me a moment to pause and reflect – about Europe, unity, and the joy of feeling so deeply connected with people from different places and diverse backgrounds. In Summer 2022, I finally experienced that joy in person, by meeting many of you in Taizé.

Your songs and your silence, your prayers and your dialogues: everything in Taizé speaks about unity in diversity. This is also the spirit of your meeting in Ljubljana. And I am particularly grateful to Brother Matthew for inviting me to reflect with you on the idea of “journeying together”. The world around us is fracturing and polarising. War has returned to Europe and to the Middle East. Faith is used to tear people apart, instead of bringing them together. Extreme forces are trying to sow division within our societies, instead of fostering cooperation towards the common good. All of this is dangerous, but none of this is inevitable. The story of Taizé – and of Europe – teaches that diversity does not have to lead to division, and reconciliation is always possible.

Think about what happened at the recent UN Climate Conference in Dubai. The gap between North and South, East and West of the world seemed too wide. We Europeans worked hard to build bridges. And in the end, the world managed to agree – for the first time ever – on the need to transition away from fossil fuels. It can be the start of a new era, where humanity and the rest of creation are finally reconciled.

In the same spirit, we will also continue to work for dialogue and reconciliation within our societies. Hamas' terror has sparked new tensions between communities also here in Europe. Antisemitism, racism and antimuslim hatred are again on the rise. But resignation is not the answer. We must redouble our efforts to bring people from different backgrounds together. This is why we want to create a pan-European space for dialogue and reconciliation. It will be organised as a series of citizens' dialogues, and it will be an opportunity to know each other and get out of our social bubbles. An opportunity to counter prejudice and replace it with understanding. I count on your engagement and your energy to help bring this new initiative to life.

The spirit of our Union is the spirit of Taizé. We are deeply rooted in our values and beliefs. And this is what gives us the strength to be open to the other. I wish you all a rich and happy stay in Slovenia. And I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Dear young people.

Your meeting in 2023 is taking place in a time of many tensions, divisions and armed conflicts, of which there are currently more than fifty across the world. The war in Ukraine is still raging near us, and the Israeli-Palestinian war in the Middle East has no end in sight. Many civilians are suffering, and in their despair they are leaving their hearths, homes, families, friends and relatives. Deprived of their dignity and basic human rights, they are leaving their towns and regions, where life is no longer worthy of a human being, on the contrary, it has become inhumane. I follow the news on a daily basis and I am saddened to see that the argument of power is prevailing over the power of argument. Although many, many people are calling for peace, it is not yet on the horizon. The calls are not heard by those who are causing the wars.

God means something unique to each individual, but I firmly believe that God's first message is clear. Peace! Our common mission is to ensure the conditions in which it will be possible not only to live in peace, but to live in a safe environment that will allow progress and joy for all, especially for children, who are those who suffer the most in wars. They are robbed of a carefree childhood. Only peace will enable us not to dwell on the past, but to provide the conditions in which the real challenges of our times can be faced. Among these, technological advancements and climate change are far and away at the forefront. The former can also have detrimental consequences for individuals, communities and the world as a whole if they are not used for the good of humanity.

However, we will only manage to do this together on the basis of acceptance of diversity and with tolerance, in a culture of dialogue, in a spirit of acknowledgement of past mistakes and forgiveness, accepting and overcoming the sins of the past, and with our eyes and will fixed on the present and the future. We need to summon all the energy we have. All of us, every single one of us. We must create the conditions for peace, for the dignity of all, for the inclusion of the most marginalised and vulnerable, for the return of those who had to leave. War refugees, economic and climate migrants repeatedly say that they would prefer to stay at home, in their own countries, if only there were peace and basic conditions for a decent life there.

Dear young friends, I trust that you have the will and the strength to take a big step, even a decisive one, towards cooperation, mutual understanding, the elimination of divisions, and the acceptance of differences and diversity as integral parts of our societies and the understanding of an inclusive vision of the future.

My heartfelt wish for all is that 2024 will be a year of peace, that all would share kindness, solidarity and humanity with others. In this way each of us will leave a mark that will make the world a better place and somebody a happier person.

I wish that this year's gathering in Ljubljana may stay in your memories forever and that the friendships made may remain in your hearts for a long time to come.
