It covers the day-to-day life of the Taizé Community during this period and also describes the travels of Brother Roger, at the end of each year, with a team of young adults to places of poverty across the world – with boat-people on the South China Sea, with slum-dwellers in Nairobi, Kenya, and with indigenous Americans in the south of Chile. In addition, Brother Roger speaks of his encounters with significant people, including several popes and the secretary general of the United Nations.

This third volume of the personal journals of Brother Roger (1915-2005) concerns the years from 1972 to 1976. It covers the final preparations and the opening of the “Council of Youth”, an attempt to take seriously the desire for renewal of church and society of the younger generations and to orient it in a positive direction. Brother Roger also speaks of the life of the community and its many visitors, his personal spiritual journey, and the trips he took to different parts of the world, notably, at the end of 1976, to a poor neighborhood of Calcutta with an intercontinental team of young people.

Dieses Album mit Gesängen aus Taizé in deutscher Sprache entstand im Nachgang zum Europäischen Jugendtreffen in Rostock 2022/2023. Es wurde vom 8. bis 10. März 2024 in Rostock mit dem Choralchor und Solisten der St.-Johannis-Kantorei sowie mit einigen mit Taizé befreundeten Musikern aufgenommen.

Thầy Roger bước vào cuộc sống vĩnh hằng vào ngày 16 tháng 8 năm 2005. Cộng đoàn Taizé xuất bản những trang sách này để chứng thực lòng biết ơn vô hạn đối với món quà sự sống của người sáng lập. Cuốn sách này chỉ ra những trực giác chính yếu của Thầy Roger và cách thầy hiện thực hóa chúng trong hành trình lịch sử của cộng đoàn. Koinobia - Life together

To live in community on the banks of the Nile. This was the surprising idea of several men and women in the fourth century, in Egypt.
Following the inspiration of the young Pachomius, they made their home in a deserted village, which little by little came to life again. Their example inspired others to begin to do the same thing.
Thus the first koinobia came into being: places where people left everything behind in order to live out the Gospel together.
But all these different characters living on top of each other – could it ever work?
The seasons come and go. Moods change.
Neighbours become difficult to get on with.
Would the desire of everyone for harmony be enough? The loss of one person would be failure for all.
Would it turn out to be a joyful adventure, or lead to certain disaster?

Koinobia is a strategic, simple and intriguing journey into the life of the monastic communities founded by Abba Pachomius in Egypt.

A game realised with several people

Koinobia is a board game imagined, developed and illustrated by brothers of the Taizé Community during the years 2023-2024. As with Kellia, it has been tested and revised after feedback from different people visiting Taizé, and also from friends of the brothers in Alagoinhas, Brazil, where they have been living for many years.

A cooperative strategy game

Koinobia is a cooperative game: players win together or lose together. With its simple structure, it's also a real strategy game where each game is different, with several levels of difficulty possible. It will appeal to beginners and experienced players alike.

An echo of monastic life in the fourth century

Koinobia was inspired by the monastic communities founded by Abba Pachomius in Upper Egypt in the fourth century. The game contains many well-known historical details about these villages, the Koinobia (a word which means “places of common life” in ancient Greek) as well as elements specific to this type of life: an Abba or an Amma, the role of their decisions, some common rules, a community council....

A community game

Koinobia can be played by anyone. There are no prerequisites for entering the imaginary world of the game. However, an attentive observer will find in it the tensions inherent in all community life: between the collective and the individual, between concern for oneself and concern for others, the search for the common good, the sharing of resources, the role of the one in charge.... Koinobia can therefore be particularly interesting to play between people who are used to cooperating: a group of friends, co-workers, members of the same family, youth groups, people living under the same roof.

A game with ten variants

In addition to the basic game, Koinobia contains ten variants. Each corresponds to one of the villages founded during Pachomius' lifetime. These variants are like little scenarios that add a new dynamic to the game. Many of them allude to questions that have been raised by monastic communities across the ages: collegiality, alternating mandates, invariable structures, consultation of all the members....

A portable game

Koinobia is designed to take up very little space (15.7x12.5x7 cm). The game is made in the European Union, with materials chosen to limit the carbon footprint of its manufacture as much as possible.

The Quest for Light

This exhibition, "The Quest for Light", brings together 26 works by Brother Eric of Taizé (1925-2007), mainly paintings, watercolors on paper and a few icons. There are Burgundian landscapes, as well as monochromes that date back mainly to his New York period (1978-1986), when he lived with several brothers in the fraternity in the (then) notorious Hell's Kitchen district near Times Square. Various works on biblical themes will also be on display.

Brother Eric was born in Geneva, the son of Jean de Saussure, a pastor who was a friend and supporter of the community from its very beginnings. He later led art therapy sessions at the Cery psychiatric hospital near Lausanne (1986-1991). But Lausanne had been the place where his artistic vocation was born long ago. These two exhibitions, first in Geneva and then in Lausanne, are therefore presented in places that were important to Brother Eric.

• At Lausanne Cathedral from March 21 to April 21. Free admission. Opening on Thursday, March 21, 2024 from 7:00 pm, with the participation of the Vocalistes Romands (same works as in Geneva).

Who were the ammas (“fathers”) and ammas (“mothers”) of the desert?

An elder said to one of the brothers: Go and stay in your kellion * and your kellion will teach you everything.

In around the fourth century, in Egypt, but also in Syria, Palestine and other areas of the Middle East and Asia Minor, a few men, and also some women, left their possessions, their families, and the everyday life of their time and went to live alone in the desert. They are known as the desert fathers and mothers.

There they lived an austere life. They made their homes in caves or in little kellia which they built themselves. They ate bread, herbs, and vegetables. They earned their living by simple manual work: weaving linen, making baskets or ropes…. And above all they prayed.

What was their motivation? Above all a deep thirst for communion with God. Their humble manual work, their life of poverty and asceticism, continual prayer, acceptation of oneself and of others, and the struggle with one's own darkness… the amma or abba undertook all these things in order to be available for God. The kellion, which was both their refuge and the place they chose to remain in, became the symbol of this personal struggle.

In the desert, each one confided to an elder his or her way of life, the thoughts that came to them, their habits… This was surely the most cooperative aspect of their lives.

Traces of these conversations have come down to us in the form of hundreds of brief stories, like the one quoted above, in which we find a mixture of wisdom, advice, anecdotes, imagination, and humour…

Though their life can seem heroic to us, it was above all very realistic. In the desert, there is almost nothing, and surviving meant looking after the few living things to be found there. That was true not only for food, for the earth, but also for the other people they occasionally met, and even, according to some legends, animals as well.

Respect for all that is alive, contemplation of the vast desert spaces, getting to grips with one's own limits… Could it not be said that the abbas and ammas practised, rather ahead of their time, a real ecology of the desert?

Here are the answers to questions that are sometimes asked about Kellia.

- What does Kellia mean?

Kellion (plural kellia) is a Greek word meaning “cell”, a kind of little house.
In them live the ammas and abbas, protagonists of the game, in around the fourth century, chose to lead a solitary life in the desert.

- How was the game made?

The conception, the rules of the game, and the artwork were worked out by some of the brothers during the course of the year 2021. Several more brothers and young people visiting Taizé helped test the game. The game is manufactured by a company in the European Union.

- What is cooperative game?

Kellia is a cooperative game, rather than a competitive one. The players have to work together to try to face the challenges set by the game. They win all together or lose all together.

- Is it possible to play several times?

Of course! There are two versions of Kellia: an introductory version, to get to know the main rules, and a full version, which requires more strategy and which makes the game more varied, with different levels of difficulty.

Concerning the rules

- I already have 7 cubes, but I don't yet have a Water cube. Can I still collect a Water cube or beg one at the church?

No. To do that you need to make room, for example by giving a cube to another player, by placing a cube, or by discarding an Inner Life cube (which gives you 3 more actions).

- In the full version, sandstorms remover everything from one sector of the board: cubes, improvements, pathways... Do buildings have to be removed too?

Each building replaces a desert square and becomes totally integrated in the game. So building squares are mixed up with the other squares of the sector affected.

- In the full version, can I contemplate on a desert square where an Attention cube or a Work cube has been placed?

Yes, because this square has not yet been replaced: it is still a desert square.

- In the full version, after a sandstorm, an obstacle has appeared right in front of a kellion. Is it possible to avoid this?

This can be avoided by placing the new desert square in front of a kellion.
But when the throw of the die is a 6, it is possible to protect only one kellion in this way.
In that case, the players can think together about where it is best to place the desert square, according to the capacities of the players, the geography of the desert, the order in which they will play...

- In the full version, at the beginning of a game at the “difficult” level, a playing token for the calendar is placed on the Saturday square. What happens in the first round?

At the end of the first day, the players go to the church rather than to their kellia (like every Saturday evening).

In the fourth century after Christ, in a remote area of Egypt, a handful of men and women in search of the absolute move to the desert, in small huts (kellia) on the outskirts of a village.

But life in the desert is far from easy! Everyone must ensure their material survival, accept the risks of a hostile place, cultivate the land, and above all, for those who would become the first Christian hermits, fight with their own demons.

But for these people, who are to become the first Christian hermits, it will be the site of a captivating adventure.

Kellia is a cooperative game of strategy, created and illustrated by the Brothers of the Taizé Community, which is inspired by the lives of the desert fathers and mothers. It combines spirituality, mutual help, and ecology.
